Photo Rejuvenation
of Skin

For fresher,
younger-looking skin.
Imagine the thrill of looking at yourself in the mirror and
seeing your face like it was 10 years ago. Or how great it would feel
to never worry about your wrinkles, laugh lines and crow's feet again.
As your body ages, the effects of the sun, pollution, smoking, alcohol
and stress take their toll. Then with a decrease in collagen produced
within the skin, you'll start seeing those lines turn into deeper
wrinkles. At the same time your skin looses its elasticity and
firmness causing it to sag. Most cosmetics or traditional moisturizers
only treat the symptoms of aging skin. You may see a temporary fix but
none of them can actually renew your skin's youthful glow. That's
because the way to erase wrinkles and lines is to smooth the skin and
tighten it at the same time.... just what lasers can do for you.
Elimination
of Spider and Varicose Veins

A small
beam of light makes the difference. Spider veins are thin, reddish
purple veins that are visible on the legs. They are usually clustered
on the thigh or below the knee. Spider veins, or telangiecstasias,
affect as many as 80% of all woman as they grow older, and also affect
a large percentage of men. This is generic for the most part, although
other causes are pregnancy, childbirth, use of birth-control pills,
estrogen replacement therapy, previous injury, and the use of
corticosteroids. Spider veins are usually not a medical problem, but
they may cause embarrassment and the reluctance to wear shorts or
swimming suits. In years past, there was very little that could be done
to remove spider veins. Now, with the use of laser, Sheepshead Bay
Laser Center can virtually erase the problem. Leg telangiecstasias are
not varicose veins or deep veins. They are superficial veins that have
become permanently dilated. One treatment is electrodessication, which
involves forcing the vein shut with electrical current. Another
treatment called sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the
vein to force it to close.
At Sheepshead Bay Laser Center, the laser is used to erase spider
veins. This laser has been specially designed to treat spider veins and
other vascular lesions. If you, a family member, or a friend is
suffering from the embarrassment of spider veins, give us a call.

Microdermabrasion

What it is:
Microdermabrasion (also known as particle resurfacing and by
other names, including Power Peels, Derma Peels and Parisian Peels) is
a skin polishing technique, performed successfully in our office. The
operator uses a handheld device that blasts fine particles of sand like
crystals (aluminum oxide or soda) against the client's skin and vacuums
away the used crystals, dirt and dead surface skin. Microdermabrasion
is also called a "lunchtime peel", because it takes only 20-30 min. for
a full-face treatment. This procedure can also be used on the neck and
chest. The patient can then return to work with only mild skin redness,
which can be covered up right away with makeup. The redness will fade
on its own after an hour or two. This procedure is not painful
(patients feel a slight tingling as it being done), requires no
anesthesia and will not adversely lighten or darken African American
skin, as some exfoliating treatments do. The treatment leaves the skin
with a healthy glow. To achieve optimal benefits, 5 to 10 treatments,
every 7 to 10 days, are needed; most patients see improvements after
the fourth or the fifth session. After the initial series, periodic
maintenance treatments (from once a month to once
every 3 months, as needed) are often recommended.
Botox
and Dysport Injections

Sheepshead
Bay Laser Center is pleased to offer neurotoxins injections/treatment
(BOTOX and Dysport) for the reduction and elimination of facial creases,
lines and wrinkles on
the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes.
WHAT
ARE Neurotoxins? Botox and dysport are made
from bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Although it s the chemical
that causes botulism, in very dilute quantities it has been used
medically for over decades to provide relief from muscle spasms by
causing a temporary paralysis of the muscles into which it is injected.
There is no reported risk of botulism using this very dilutes
concentration of the chemical.
WHAT
ARE THE BENEFITS? The muscles of
facial expression are connected to the skin overlying them. After years
of use, the muscles create visible lines and creases. By paralyzing the
superficial muscles attached to the skin, wrinkles "relax" and soften.
When the muscles are paralyzed, the creation of more wrinkles is
prevented. The overall effect is a smoother, more serene, more
youthful appearance. It is like having a "brow lift" without invasive
surgery.
IS
IT SAFE? BOTOX and Dysport
injections have been widely used for cosmetic purposes for decades,
and have been enthusiastically endorsed by those who have used it. It is
impossible to get botulism poisoning from BOTOX and Dysport injections.
WHAT
WRINKLES CAN BE TREATED? The most
commonly treated areas are the forehead, around the eyes and between
the eyebrows. With BOTOX and Dysport injections, Crow's feet can be softened; the
furrow between the brows can be diminished and forehead wrinkles can be
lessened.
CAN
I STILL MOVE MY FACE? Yes, but
not as much. Extreme movements of the forehead and eyebrows, which
create the wrinkles, will be prevented, but other muscles in the face
will not be affected by BOTOX and Dysport injections.
HOW
LONG WILL THE TREATMENT TAKE? A
very small amount of the diluted drug is injected directly into the
muscle in the desired treatment area. The procedure is very quick. It
is important to remain in an upright position for two to three hours
after the treatment so the BOTOX and Dysport will remain in place in the
treated area.
DOES
THE BOTOX INJECTIONS HURT? Individuals vary in their response. Some people experience stinging
while BOTOX or Dysport are being injected, but there is rarely any pain following
treatment. The application of ice packs to the area before treatment
will decrease the discomfort associated with the injections.
HOW
LONG WILL THE RESULTS FROM THE BOTOX INJECTIONS LAST? Again, with BOTOX and Dysport injections, individuals vary. However, for most
people the results last 3 to 6 months. Facial muscles that are larger
or which are used a lot by facially "expressive" patients may require
treatments more frequently. Often the facial muscles become trained to
not move as much so that, over time, less BOTOX and Dysport are needed to keep the
facial lines reduced.
WHAT
ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS? Since the
effects of BOTOX and Dysport injections are not permanent, significant side
effects are rare. Bruising or redness at the injection sites can occur,
and headaches are not uncommon. If the BOTOX migrates too close to the
eyelid, a temporary droping of the upper lid can occur, but this is
extremely rare.
BOTOX
INJECTIONS: PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS - Avoid aspirin, aspirin-contained products and non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory agents for 10 days prior to treatment. Avoid alcohol
for one week prior to treatment.
BOTOX
INJECTIONS: POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS - Remain in an upright position for 2 to 3 hrs after the treatment;
avoid alcohol, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents for
at least 2 days. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours.
Tylenol can be used for any lingering discomfort.

Fractional Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing

StarLux Fractional
Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing offers both superior results and little
to no downtime. The Lux1540 fractional microbeams penetrate deep into
the epidermis and dermis for effective, long-term results. The
fractional, non-ablative approach stimulates quick healing with no long
term redness. StarLux treatments can be performed on most areas of the
body, including the face, chest, arms and hands. A series of treatments
at 3-6 week intervals may be required to achieve the desired
results. Generally, you can receive a treatment and go back to work or
to other activities without any recovery time.

CO2 ablative laser resurfacing has been the Gold Standard for non
surgical facial rejuvenation and removal of facial skin wrinkles and
photo aging since 1995. CO2 ablative laser resurfacing using the
Ultrapulse CO2 laser can achieve very significant facial rejuvenation
including wrinkle removal, skin tightening and removal of pigment and
photo aging skin changes. (See Photo Below Before and After Ablative
CO2 Laser Resurfacing).
However CO2 laser resurfacing has several limitations including a
prolonged and difficult recovery period, often lasting three weeks,
prolonged facial redness that can last three months, hypo pigmentation
or lightening of skin color, and the potential for infection which can
lead to scarring.
During the
past three years new technology called fractional
laser resurfacing has been developed which has
dramatically shortened recovery time and lessened the occurrence of
complications.
With fractional laser resurfacing the laser beam is broken up or fractionated into many
small micro beams which are separated so that when they strike the skin
surface small areas of the skin between the beams are not hit by the
laser and left intact. These small areas of untreated skin promote a
much more rapid recovery and healing with less risk of complications.
The small areas treated by the fractional micro beams, called micro
treatment zones, cause sufficient laser injury to promote new collagen
production and resultant facial skin rejuvenation. ( See Diagram Below)

In the above skin diagram, the first red area on the left represents
traditional non fractional ablative CO2 and Erbium laser resurfacing.
To ablate means to surgically remove and the skin tissue is removed by
the heat of the CO2 or Erbium laser. Since these lasers were not
fractional, all of the skin in the treated area is removed creating an
open wound that takes a long time to heal.
